Darren Helm Brings Cup Home

St. Andrews will be hosting a very special visitor in just over a week. Rather, make that two very special visitors.

Darren Helm will be in St. Andrews July 14 along with the Stanley Cup, the coveted trophy Helm and his Detroit Red Wing teammates captured after downing the Pittsburgh Penguins in six games last month. With each winning player having just 24 hours with the Cup, hockey’s holy grail will have a short, but extremely busy, trip to St. Andrews. “I think it’s great, a local boy who skated on the outdoor rink all the time and played minor hockey in St. Andrews and now he’s giving something back to the community,” said Darren Zembik, arena manager at the St. Andrews Community Club, adding he expects at least 2,000 fans to see Helm and the Cup.

Winkler hosted Lord Stanley last year and attracted some 3,000 fans. “It’s huge for the kids and the elderly people. This is going to be a great event and hats off to Darren for thinking of St. Andrews and bringing it to the club. Time will be limited, but Darren wants to share it with the community and family members and close personal friends, so the day is going to be jam-packed,” Zembik added.

The Cup will be on display at the community club from 2-5 p.m. while Helm, the pride of St. Andrews, will be signing autographs on a stage inside the arena. As well, a barbecue, music, face painting and a visit from Mickey Moose will keep parents and kids entertained throughout the afternoon.

Meanwhile, Helm’s No. 43 Detroit jersey - autographed by members of the Red Wings - will be auctioned off. All proceeds from the event will go towards St. Andrews Community Club’s outdoor rink, as requested by Helm.
Zembik said Lord Stanley’s mug has been to St. Andrews before, ironically with the Detroit Red Wings back in the days of the legendary Gordie Howe and former Selkirk native, Jimmy Skinner, who coached Detroit to a Stanley Cup in 1955. Still, Zembik believes this will be the first time it is introduced to the St. Andrews Community Club.

Steelers To Host ALL-STAR Weekend

The last time Selkirk hosted the MJHL all-star game back in 2003-04, the Steelers capped off the season with a Turnbull Cup championship. The Steelers are hoping history repeats itself this season.

Selkirk will host the MJHL all-star weekend this upcoming season, bringing the best and brightest stars of the top junior league in the province to the Selkirk Rec Complex next January. The Steelers’ bid beat out the Winkler Flyers for the right to host the all-star weekend. The Flyers will host the event in 2009-10.

“Maybe it’s a good luck charm for us because we won the (MJHL) in 2003-04, the year we hosted it,” said Steelers’ GM Ken Petrash Tuesday morning. “Anytime you can host an event like that where you have the best junior players in Manitoba coming together, its a great honour for the City of Selkirk and good for us to get it twice in the last five years. It tells us we must have done an all right job the last time it was around so they must have confidence that we’ll do it again.” Dennis Park will head the committee that will host the weekend festivities, which will include a breakfast to introduce the participating players, the prospects game and the skills competition.

As well, Petrash hinted they are also looking at putting together a game involving the Manitoba AAA Midget Hockey League. Selkirk is also hosting the midget national championship - Telus Cup - here next season.

Grand Beach - still a best bet!

For the third time, Grand Beach has been recognized by a magazine for being one of the most outstanding and beautiful beaches North America has to offer. Canadian Geographic Travel Magazine named Grand Beach one of the Top 25 beaches in Canada in its May issue that features beaches from all areas of Canada.
Canadian Geographic senior editor Patricia D’Souza explained that the feature was aimed at representing regional variety from all around the country, as well as a wide range of beaches.

“Grand Beach is a spectacular place,” D’Souza said, “the number of people that go there every year make it one of the more popular beaches, with lots of things to do.”
Steve Strang, Municipal Mayor of the RM of St. Clements, says Grand Beach making the list has come at no surprise, as it has been honored by international publications before including Playboy who named the beach among the Top 10 beaches in the entire world.

“It was really no surprise to us, we knew it was great already but it’s always nice to hear it from the outside.” Strang said. Strang says that the publication couldn’t come at a better time, as the municipality is launching several big operations to overhaul Grand Marais (a part of Grand Beach) into a resort center.

“We have some unbelievable plans on the table,” Strang said. “We’re hoping to make Grand Marais the ‘next best’.”
